Salary and Expenses

Dundee City Council has published councillors salaries and expenses today. You can look at the expenses and salary costs here. You will see that I have taken the basic nationally agreed salary for councillors of £16,233.96 plus the council has paid £167.66 for my mobile phone. My phone bill has increased this year because councillors are now provided with smartphones which have higher costs. If you have any questions about my expenses please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Dundee Rep Board

On Tuesday evening I attended a meeting of Dundee Rep Board. I am a huge fan of the work which the Rep does. For me the Rep is at the forefront of the cultural regeneration of Dundee. The Rep delivers world-class drama and dance in Dundee, there is no contradiction in this in my view. Dundee is a small city but we can still aim for the very best in Dundee.

Anna Karenina is currently on at the Rep. I am sure that it is well worth going to see.

Committee Meetings 23 May 2011

Monday evening saw meetings of the Education, City Development and Social Work and Health Committees of the City Council.

The main item at the Education Committee was a progress report on car parking and drop-off near to Primary schools. It is clear that progress has been made however there is still more to do. Every effort must be made to ensure that the areas around our schools are as safe as possible. This means that the current campaign needs to be supported and also renewed on an on-going basis. If you have any concerns about safety near to any of the schools in the West End please get in touch with me.

The City Development Committee heard about plans to spend money to upgrade the bus information at bus stops. This is good but it is important that the system is robust and that it works more often than not.

The Social Work and Health Committee looked at how the council will manage external provision of care; it must ensure that standards are maintained and that cost is not the only consideration. The Committee also considered reforms to the Blue Badge scheme. There can be no excuse for abusing the blue badge by drivers who are not disabled but any changes must not penalise those who rely on the scheme to maintain their mobility.

WestFest - Piggy Back World Record Attempt

As a local councillor I am delighted to support the second ever WestFest. I was sorry that family commitments prevented me from attending attending the launch of the attempt at the World Record for Piggy Back Riding but it was good to see a Cross-Party consensus in support of it. This should be a fun event and I hope that it is a great success.

It is also worth checking out the whole programme for WestFest, there is a huge amount going on. I hope that the whole festival is a great success and I would say well done to the organisers.

World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Scotland; Dundee as training centre

As Labour's Leisure, Arts and Communities spokesperson in Dundee, I have welcomed the news that the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will be held in Glasgow in 2015. I've called for the City Council and Dundee Leisure to make every effort to ensure that the new gymnastics facility at the McTaggart Centre is used as a training venue for teams competing in the competition.

I am delighted that Dundee City Council is investing in the McTaggart Centre and making it a regional centre for gymnastics training. I know that gymnastics is a very popular sport in Dundee, it would be good if this excellent new facility in Dundee was used by international gymnasts in the days leading up to the world championships in Glasgow. I hope that the investment in the new facility in Dundee will even lead to Dundee gymnasts being part of the British team at the world championships.

International athletes training in Dundee would bring international attention to our city and would also be a great encouragement to young gymnasts in the city.
