At the City Council's Education Committee there was supposed to be a debate about the future of Law Nursery. The report which should have been discussed can be found here. What appeared to be the views of the Education Convener can be found here. Many parents have contacted me over the past week to highlight their concerns about this proposal. I have read the report and I have to say that I was far from convinced that this was the way forward.
Inexplicably, this report was pulled from the agenda at the last minute. When I say inexplicably I suspect that it is explicable but that the explanation has nothing to education and everything to do with trying to protect the SNP's position.
I was disappointed that we were denied the Education Convener's explanation of how this 'really exciting proposal' would have a 'positive impact on children's education.' Indeed the Convener refused to explain why this report had been pulled from the agenda, and also refused to give any indication of whether this proposal has been withdrawn permanently or whether it will resurface at some point in the future.
I share my colleague Laurie Bidwell's views on this farce which are set out below:
Labour Education Spokesperson, Councillor Laurie Bidwell said, 'This is a humiliating climb down by the SNP administration.
But it's also an insult to the many parents and carers who have arrived to have their say in deputations to the Education Committee. Through her action, Convener Fordyce is denying the democratic opportunity of these parents to address the Education Committee directly about their concerns about her flawed proposal to downgrade and move their nursery school. I think parents connected to Law Nursery and the valued nursery staff deserve an early statement from the SNP led Administration if not their Education Convener to clarify what happens next. Any prolonged delay will lead to uncertainty. Whether the Law Nursery School will be on its current site in Lawside Road or become a nursery class and be relocated over a mile away at Rosebank Primary School in August is of real importance to parents and ultimately the pre-school education of their children. But the Education Convener should be clear, the weight of public opinion I have encountered in support of Law Nursery School as it stands has been considerable. These parents will not be put off by her political manoeuvring and playing for time. '
